Senator Tom Jensen says support for Senate Bill 50 has nothing to do with his
legal profession.
"But apparently someone went to the press and said 'Tom Jensen represented
Operation Unite,'' said the London attorney and state senator.
UNITE wants the bill passed to curb meth labs because the organization says
people are using Sudafed and other products as the key ingredient. Jensen said
on the Senate floor Friday that some allege he's being improperly influenced by
UNITE. He denies that...and says he's actually represented those who benefited
from meth.
"I'm going to tell you, I'm not practicing law for the heck of it. I'm there
for the money. I'm here for the heck of it," said Jensen.
Despite several weeks of testimony in committee, there's still been no vote
on Senate Bill 50. Jensen says that will come but not before those whose lives
have been adversely affected by the drug have the ability to testify.
The bill has bi-partison support and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle
came to Jensen's defense.
"But I rise to call on the people of this legislature to be more respectul of
each other," said Sen. Julian Carroll, D-Frankfort.
The bill is opposed by those who claim it would put too much of a hardship on
people to buy some medicines. Some say the bill could be a matter of life and
death.
"Let me tell you something, it's killing kids, it's killing numerous young
people," said Sen. Joey Pendleton, D-Hopkinsville.
Similar legislation wasn't voted on in either chamber last year for lack of
support.
